1. The Dawes Commission was established to negotiate with the "Five Civilized Tribes".2. The Commission was appointed by President Cleveland in 1893.

The Dawes Roll mostly give name, age, sex, degree of Indian blood and number of census card (enrollment card). 7. The Dawes Roll was prepared by The Commission and Commissioner to the "Five Civilized Tribes" and approved by THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR on or prior to March 4, 1907 8. The Dawes Roll was compiled and printed under authority conferred by THE ACT OF CONGRESS and approved June 21, 1906. 9. Today, the "Five Civilized Tribes" use the Dawes as the basis to determine tribal membership. 10. The " Five Civilized Tribes" usually use applicants to show proof of descent(s) from a person on these lists.
